DRESSED FOR JOB INTERVIEW..? What That Colour Says About You.

When we talk about appearance, what most candidates do for interview is “dressing for attraction”. An important rule of the game is to avoid been remembered for your attire; you need to wear something that allows the interviewer to focus on your skills and qualifications rather than your newly bought multi-colour dress.

Wearing solid colors helps ensure that your clothes will not distract. Colour has fashion and psychological appeal and even makes you appear familiar or strange. People naturally attach emotion with colour. Different colour has different traditional meaning, thus it affects the way we look, and reflect our moods.

Different colors
evoke particular human reactions, whether or not we are conscious of them. Solid colour like navy, dark gray, and black suits help you look professional without being distracting. Small patterns, like pinstripes, are good as well. Below is a list of different colours you might want to wear for an interview, and the emotions they can evoke.

Brown - Brown is a neutral color that evokes feelings of calm. It is a great solid, neutral color for any interview. But I will not recommend it for suit, brown shoe and belt will go for men, while brown accessories will be good for ladies.

Blue - Blue, particularly navy, is another great neutral color for interview outfits. Blues convey feelings of calm, trust, and confidence. It is restful and conservative. It symbolizes restraint, peace and tranquility. Darker blues (like navy) convey authority and confidence. Blue are also many people's favorite colour, and wearing an interviewer's favorite colour will always make a great first impression.

Gray - Gray is another great neutral colour for interview outfits. It evokes sophistication and neutrality. If you can manage the impression, gray is a great colour to wear as a suit; it allows you to look powerful, but is not quite as domineering as a black suit or dress.

Black – Black is sophisticated in appearance. It serves as a dramatic accent when used with white or other light or bright colour. Black is a very popular color for suits in interviews. Black is a very commanding color that conveys a lot of power, and authority. This is a generally accepted colour for interview, or better put, widely used for interview. But for its overwhelming attribute, mostly in a more laid-back environment, it can make you appear unapproachable. It is associated with depression and night time. I will advise you rule out black shirt or blouse from your interview attire.

Red – Red is a bright, powerful color that conveys energy and passion, but you must be careful with it. Because of its being associated with blood and fire, it evokes the greatest reaction from people. Hot red keeps people awake and restless. A touch of red for a scarf or tie can give you just the right amount of passion without giving you away as too emotional.

White - Crisp and clean, white is a great color for shirts and blouses. It represents innocence, purity, hope, peace and love. The color conveys truth and simplicity, and adds a bit of brightness without being too overwhelming. White shirt or blouse goes well for interview.   – Red is a bright, powerful color that conveys energy and passion, but you must be careful with it. Purple – Purple is associated with royalty, represents elegance, drama, splendor, opulence and regal appearance. It warms in appearance, but it also evokes feelings of sorrow, affliction and mystery. While I will recommend purple for ladies’ accessories, I will ask guys to think not of it for interview.

Yellow Yellow is a cheerful and festive colour, it is very visible from a distance. Like purple, yellow is more okay for ladies’ accessories than for guys. A yellow dress may cause you to look larger than other candidates in the interview hall.

Green This is another lady’s colour. Green is taken as nature’s color because it spreads across the land. It is a cool receding colour that harmonizes with all other colour. If a lady could be moderate with it, green is an ideal touch for interview.
